Titanium dioxide, also known as titanium(IV) oxide or titania, is a widely used white pigment due to its brightness and high refractive index. There are two primary methods used to produce pigmentary titanium dioxide: the sulfate process and the chloride process. The Sulfate Process: 1. A high grade titanium ore, usually ilmenite, undergoes purification to remove impurities. 2. The purified ore is treated with a large amount of concentrated sulfuric acid at high temperatures, typically for 2 days. This results in the creation of a solution of titanium sulphate and impurities. 3. The solution is then allowed to settle, during which the impurities separate and sediment at the bottom. 4. The remaining solution undergoes hydrolysis, which involves adding water to create hydrated titanium dioxide and sulfuric acid. 5. The resulting product is then heated to a very high temperature to remove extra water and impurities, which yields titanium dioxide. The Chloride Process: 1. In this process, high purity titanium ore such as rutile is used. 2. The ore is chlorinated in the presence of carbon at high temperature to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), a volatile liquid compound. 3. Titanium tetrachloride is then purified through fractional distillation before it is oxidized at high temperatures in the presence of oxygen time to form titanium dioxide and chlorine. 4. This resulting product is then treated to remove impurities and create pigmentary titanium dioxide. In both processes, the titanium dioxide pigment can be further processed to achieve various grades and types of titanium dioxide suitable for different uses such as in paints, plastics, and other industries. Remember, these processes involve hazardous materials and high temperatures, thus should be carried out in controlled environments and precautions should be taken to manage waste responsibly.
