1. Look for Zircon’s Double Refraction: All zircon gemstones have a property known as double refraction. This means when light passes through the gemstone, it splits in two. When looking at the stone from the top, if you see double facets, then it's possibly a zircon.
2. Check for high refractive index and dispersion: Zircons have a high refractive index (1.93-1.98) which gives them a high brilliance. They also have a high dispersion, resulting in a strong fire, much higher than other gemstones. You should find rainbow flashes in the gemstone.
3. Heat or UV Test: When put under UV light, zircon will exhibit fluorescence. It will reflect a light blue or yellowish-green light under the UV light. Also, taking a torch and flashing it on to the stone, real zircon will show you the beautiful and intense fire it has due to its double reflective index.
4. Use a Gemstone Tester: It is best to use a gemstone tester pen or any similar device to determine whether the gemstone is real zircon. These devices use heat or electricity to know whether the gemstone is genuine or fake.
5. Professional Test: A professional gemologist can perform the most accurate test. They will observe the gem under a microscope and use advanced gemological equipment to identify the stone.Note: Although these methods can help to identify a real zircon, they are not 100% infallible as some fake gemstones can mimic the properties of real zircon.
