Titanium was discovered in 1791 by amateur geologist Reverend William Gregor from Cornwall, England. Gregor discovered the element in a stream in the parish of Mannacan in Cornwall. He noticed the sand was attracted by a magnet, which he found unusual. He analyzed the sand and found black, magnetic sand that resembled iron oxide, known as ilmenite. Gregor was able to separate the ilmenite into its iron component and a residue, which was a metal oxide. He recognized this oxide as something entirely new, and reported his findings to the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall. It wasn't until four years later, in 1795, that German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth realized that Gregor's new metal was actually a new element. Klaproth named it "Titanium" after the powerful Titans in Greek mythology. However, it took another 119 years before the pure form of Titanium was finally isolated in 1910 by Matthew A. Hunter.
